The Toronto and Region Conservation Authority and the Design Exchange are challenging Canadian architects, engineers and designers to build the ultimate environmentally friendly and affordable house. The winning house of the first Sustainable Housing Competition will be open to the public, so homeowners can learn about and choose sustainable features for their own homes. It will also be a model for sustainable subdivisions in the Ontario communities of Vaughan, Newmarket and Pickering. The criteria for the competition will be determined at the end of August.
For the home to be sustainable, it must use renewable resources, seek to minimize or eliminate negative environmental impacts, and increase people’s quality of life. Design teams are asked to submit a letter of intent to participate in the competition by October 7, 2005. Design proposals will be due in March 2006, and will be on exhibit at the Design Exchange until a winner is selected on June 15, 2006.
