The architectural profession is experiencing an exciting new phase in design practice. Many transitions have led us to this point of emerging practice from the architect as the master mason to a representation-maker; from pen and pencil to mouse and keyboard; three-dimensional digital models to parametric databases. With these technological advancements in design and fabrication, architects and designers are now diversifying their traditional scope of responsibility and experimenting with new modes of creation. To critically assess where we currently stand and project the methods of the future, we look to the leaders of exploration and innovation to compare and contrast their processes of design.
On Tuesday, January 28, 2014 at Toronto’s Design Exchange, Ryerson University’s Master of Architecture class invites architects, academics, industry professionals and students to come together to explore and debate the effects this metamorphosis is having on the role of the architect.
Moderating the event will be Alex Bozikovic of The Globe and Mail, and features the following speakers: Hanif Kara, Professor in Practice of Architectural Technology at Harvard University GSD and Director of AKT II Structural Engineering; Jonathan Mallie, Principal of SHoP Architects and Managing Director of SHoP Construction; Stephen Kieran, Partner at KieranTimberlake and Adjunct Professor of Architecture at University of Pennsylvania School of Design; and Tom Bessai, Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto John H. Daniels School of Architecture and Principal of Denegri Bessai Studio Architecture and Urbanism.
The presentation runs from 6:30pm to 8:30 pm, and refreshments will be served from 8:30pm to 11:00pm. The Design Exchange is located at 234 Bay Street in Toronto.
