Addressing the Challenges and Opportunities as Toronto Pearson Approaches Capacity Milestone

Toronto Pearson has been the fastest-growing airport in North America over the last four years. Today, it serves as a significant global hub, ranking second only to John F. Kennedy International Airport in North America for international passenger traffic. In the next 15 to 20 years, it is expected that Toronto Pearson will reach capacity as regional air traffic demand approaches 70 million passengers annually.

Around the world, regional airports are critical components to the growth of global cities at both the regional and international levels, and are valuable economic drivers to the development of business, communities, and infrastructure around them. How Southern Ontario supports, and leverages this growth is a land-use planning challenge of a global scale. It has the ability to serve as a catalyst for broader and continued economic opportunity for the region and for increased investments in transit.

In approaching this air-traffic capacity milestone we should look at other urban regions such as New York, London and Hong Kong, whose experiences offer valuable lessons in developing airport systems, and the imperative to connect multiple regional airports through mass transit. How do we responsibly leverage this opportunity? What will it mean for land development across the GTHA and Southern Ontario? How will transit play a role in emerging and expanding airport hubs? What challenges have other regions had that we can learn from?

On Monday, May 4, 2015 from 11:30am to 1:30pm at the Toronto Region Board of Trade, please join the Urban Land Institute (ULI) as they gain exclusive insights from a forthcoming GTAA demand forecast identifying the regional airport capacity challenge for the GTHA and Southern Ontario, and learn from an international panel of regional airport experts, moderated by Joe Berridge, Partner at Urban Strategies.

Contributing experts include: Howard Eng, President and CEO, GTAA; Normand Boivin, COO, Heathrow Airport Ltd.; and Thomas Bosco, Aviation Director, Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

Registration and networking takes place from 11:30am to 12:00 noon, followed by the panel presentations until 1:00pm. A half-hour of discussion and audience Q&A concludes the event. Lunch will be served.

The cost is $55 for ULI full or associate members; $80 for non-members; $40 for members under age 35 and for government, nonprofit and academic members; and $20 for student members.
