The annual awards program hosted by the University of Manitoba Department of Landscape Architecture recognizes excellence in landscape architecture in categories of Design, Planning & Analysis, Research, Communications, Landscape Management, New Directions, and Residential Design.
This year out of 56 entries, 13 projects received national awards and 12 projects received regional awards.
Four projects received National Honour Awards: La Promenade Samuel-De Champlain in Quebec City by la consortium Daoust Lestage inc. – Williams Asselin Ackaoui – Option Amenagement; Outremont Campus at the Université de Montréal by Groupe Cardinal Hardy and Provencher Roy + Associés architectes; Lake Ontario Park Master Plan in Toronto by Field Operations; and Point Pleasant Park Comprehensive Plan in Halifax by Ekistics Planning and Design, NIP paysage and HRM.
Six projects received National Merit Awards: Lakeview Community Education and Landscape Politics project in Mississauga by the Centre for Landscape Research at the University of Toronto; Ground: the Landscape Architect Quarterly by the Ontario Association of Landscape Architects; Green Infrastructure in Calgary’s Mobility Corridors by the Design Centre for Sustainability at the University of British Columbia; Southeast False Creek Waterfront – Phase 1 in Vancouver by PWL Partnership Landscape Architects Ltd.; Garden City Play Environment in Richmond by space2place design inc.; and Spadina Wavedeck in Toronto by West 8 + DTAH (du Toit Allsopp Hillier).
Three projects won National Citation Awards: Port to Port Corridor Study in Sydney, NS by CBCL Limited; Urban Corridor Planning/City of Houston project by the Planning Partnership Limited; and Square des Frères-Charon in Montreal by the Ville de Montréal – Direction des grands parcs et de la nature en ville.
The three Regional Honour Awards winners are: Renaturalization of the St-Charles River – Phase 3 in Quebec City by IBI Group/DAA; Cornell Master Plan for the Ithaca Campus in New York by George Dark of Urban Strategies Inc.; and Spirit Trail in Vancouver by space2place design inc.
The four Regional Merit Awards winners are: Mountain View Cemetery – Masonic Area Redevelopment in Vancouver by LEES + Associates & Phillips Farevaag Smallenberg; Franklin Children’s Garden in Toronto by Janet Rosenberg + Associates (JRA)/Schollen & Company; Ellis Avenue Stormwater Management Wetlands in Toronto by Ecoplans Limited; and Boustrophedon Garden in Quebec City by PLANT Architect Inc.
The five Regional Citation Awards winners are: Seaton Natural Heritage System Management Plan and Master Trails Plan in Toronto by Schollen & Company Inc.; Vancouver General Hospital (VGH) Energy Centre in Vancouver by Phillips Farevaag Smallenberg Planning, Urban Design and Landscape Architecture; Safeco Insurance Roof Gardens in Seattle also by Phillips Farevaag Smallenberg Planning, Urban Design and Landscape Architecture; Red Deer Country Open Space Master Plan in Red Deer County by Bev Sandalack, the EVDS Urban Lab, and Dillon Consulting Limited; and Winnipeg Humane Society in Winnipeg by Hilderman Thomas Frank Cram Landscape Architecture and Planning.
