2002 Governor General’s Medals for Architecture: Addition, Agmont America Factory, Montreal, Quebec

Architectes Lemay et associs

An extension to the Agmont America Factory, a manufacturing facility for textile dyes, reanimates the old industrial zone near Montreal’s Lachine Canal. Materials include corrugated steel, putting a new spin on the site’s post-industrial character by borrowing rhythms from the faades of the neighbouring buildings. By counterposing the typical verticality of those surrounding buildings, including the horizontal definition articulated by floors, the simple, 55,000 square foot volume gives a fragmentary appearance rather than that of an inviolable solid. This is achieved through the play of light and shadow, solids and voids. A bridge creates a connection between the existing building and the new addition, and becomes a threshold between the districts and factories around the canal.
