City of Toronto launches technical design guideline for child care spaces

Councillor Giorgio Mammoliti (Ward 7, York West), Elaine Baxter-Trahair, General Manager, Children's Services, Brock James, Principal, Levitt Goodman Architects, City staff and a variety of child care industry professionals officially launched the Child Care Design and Technical Guideline manual at City Hall.

Levitt Goodman Architects, a Toronto-based architecture firm with considerable experience in designing spaces and buildings for children, was commissioned by Children's Services to work with the City to create the manual, an innovative 125-page publication designed to help make child care spaces safe, functional, developmentally appropriate, child-friendly and accessible for children.

The manual contains design and technical recommendations as well as best practices gathered from a variety of industry experts. It will serve as a manual for a wide range of industry professionals around the world who are involved in planning, building and renovating spaces for child care, including architects, consultants, child care owners/operators, contractors, developers, school boards and City staff. The Child Care Design and Technical Guideline is available as a free download on the City's website at www.toronto.ca/children/.
