2012 Niagara Community Design Award winners announced

The Niagara Community Design Award recipients were recently announced. This is the eighth year for the Region’s Niagara Community Design Awards, which recognize and celebrate excellence in design in Niagara and that demonstrate the application of Smart Growth Principles. The awards continue to focus on projects that enhance the built environment, efficiently use land, and demonstrate creativity and vision.

The award categories include: Larger Scale Project, Public Realm Improvement, Architecture, Façade Improvement, Adaptive Reuse, Policy and Plans, and Overall Excellence.

In the Larger Scale Project category, two awards went to Phelps Homes, Residences at Jordan Village in the Town of Lincoln and to Niagara College, Welland Campus Redevelopment in the City of Welland. The Kiwanis Aquatic Centre and Grantham Branch Library received an honourable mention.

In the Public Realm Improvement category in the City of St. Catharines, the award went to the St. Catharines Horticultural Society Garden, while the Ridge Road North Reconstruction and Public Realm received an honourable mention.

An award in Architecture distinguished the Carlisle Street Parking Facility in the City of St. Catharines in the Improvement, Town of Fort Erie category.

In the Façade Improvement category, the Quebec Bank in the City of Thorold captured an award, while an honourable mention was given to the Antica Pizzeria in the City of Niagara Falls.

The Stone Mill Inn Project in the City of St. Catharines won the award in the Adaptive Reuse category.

In the Policy and Plans category, the Beamsville Community Improvement Plan and Commercial Façade Design Guidelines for the Town of Lincoln took the award, and the City of St. Catharines Downtown Urban Design Guidelines received an honourable mention.

And finally, in the Overall Excellence category, the Niagara Falls History Museum in the City of Niagara Falls by Moriyama & Teshima claimed the top honour.
