2010 Canadian Architect Awards of Excellence winners announced

2010-12-21

Canadian Architect announces the winners of the 2010 Awards of Excellence, given each year to architects and architectural graduates for buildings in the design stage. One of only two national award programs devoted exclusively to architecture, the Awards of Excellence have recognized significant building projects in Canada on an annual basis since 1968.

This year's winners have been selected by a jury consisting of Janna Levitt of Levitt Goodman Architects in Toronto, James Cheng of James KM Cheng Architects in Vancouver, and Andrew King of Cannon Design.

Awards are given for architectural design excellence. Jurors considered response to the program, site, geographical and social context, and evaluated physical organization, structure, materials and environmental features.

Six Awards of Excellence were given to the following firms:

  • Patkau Architects Inc. for the Cottages at Fallingwater in Mill Run, Pennsylvania
  • Cannon Design for the Capilano Film Centre in North Vancouver, British Columbia
  • 5468796 Architecture Inc. for Bloc_10 in Winnipeg, Manitoba
  • Smith Carter Architects and Engineers Incorporated in association with Parkin Architects for the Women and Newborn Hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba
  • Atelier Big City for U in Montreal, Quebec
  • Baird Sampson Neuert Architects for the Brian C. Nevin Welcome Center, Cornell Plantations at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York

Four Awards of Merit recognized the following teams:

  • Kongats Architects for the Mississauga Academy of Medicine at the University of Toronto, Mississauga, Ontario
  • Provencher Roy + Associés Architectes for the Canadian Art Pavilion, Musée des Beaux-Arts de Montréal in Montreal, Quebec
  • Cardinal Hardy | Labonté Marcil | Eric Pelletier Architectes, Architectes en Consortium for the Ville Saint-Laurent Library in Montreal, Quebec
  • Eric Pelletier Architectes for Millipede in Quebec City, Quebec

This year, two students were selected as award winners for their respective graduating thesis projects. They are:

  • Jeffrey Ma of McGill University for Logic Shift
  • Taraneh Meshkani of the University of Toronto for A Manual for Non-Violent Resistance

Exclusive coverage will be granted to award winners in the December 2010 issue of Canadian Architect, and each winning architect and respective client will receive a framed certificate. Student winners will receive a framed certificate in addition to a cash award of $500.

Canadian Architect wishes to thank all firms and students who participated in this year's awards. It is the enthusiastic involvement of everyone that makes each year a great success.

Congrats to the winners, but it would have been nice had the article included photos of each of their winning structures.
