Jeremy Sturgess: Themes + Variations

This thematic exhibition is comprised of selected works commemorating three decades of practice for Calgary-based architect Jeremy Sturgess. As a committed Modernist and award-winning Canadian architect, Sturgess has garnered a Governor General’s Award for architecture and several awards for urban design. Well-known for his collaboration with contemporary artists in his architectural commissions, his growing body of work continues to make a significant contribution to the changing Canadian landscape. Five major representative projects have been selected to be described in drawings and photographs, models, artifacts, and a video. They are: the Water Centre, an office and operations centre for the City of Calgary; the Grand Theatre, a renovation of an historic theatre in Calgary; the Light Rapid Transit stations project entitled Prototype and Stations along 7th Avenue in Calgary; the Bridges Master Plan, a mixed-use development in Calgary; and the House on Bowen Island in British Columbia.

Curated by the University of Calgary’s Geoffrey Simmins, the exhibition runs from November 9 to December 12, 2009 at the Eric Arthur Gallery, John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design, University of Toronto. The opening reception takes place on Thursday,  November 12 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm.
