The Canadian Art Foundation International Speaker Series, in collaboration with the Consulate General of France in Toronto and The Power Plant, presents a lecture by Jean de Loisy, President of the Palais de Tokyo, Paris. This lecture will take place from 7:00pm to 8:30pm on Thursday, November 8, 2012 in the Studio Theatre at Harbourfront Centre in Toronto. Tickets are $12, and free for all members of The Power Plant.
Jean de Loisy, appointed President of the Palais de Tokyo in June 2011, is a freelance exhibition curator, and he has held a variety of positions in a wide range of cultural institutions. He has directed and co-directed various art institutions in France, including the Pays de la Loire Fonds Régional d’Art Contemporain, one of the first regional contemporary art funds to be established, from 1983 to 1986. He then created the Pays de la Loire Ateliers Internationaux; from 1983 to 1987, these studios welcomed artists including Richard Deacon, Harald Klingelhöller, Jan Vercruysse, Matt Mullican, Jean- Michel Alberola, Jean-Marc Bustamante, John Murphy and Juan Muñoz. From 1986 to 1988, Loisy was entrusted with the task of introducing contemporary creative work into historic monuments in France, and he then became Deputy Director of Musée de Nîmes in 1989, a role he fulfilled until 1991.
In 1990, Loisy became curator of the Fondation Cartier, and from 1994 to 1997 he was a curator at the Centre Georges Pompidou. He has taken part in many international events, including the 1993 and 2011 Venice Biennales and the 1995 Gwangju Biennale, where he showed the work of Maurizio Cattelan, Carsten Höller, Joachim Koester, Xavier Veilhan and Fabrice Hyber. He has organized monographic exhibitions on James Turrell, Bill Viola, Jeff Wall, Fischli and Weiss and Sigalit Landau, as well as prominent group exhibitions including Les Maîtres du Désordre this past summer at the Musée du Quai Branly. Loisy was also the curator for Monumenta 2011/Anish Kapoor at the Grand Palais.
